Delicious Volunteer Opportunity!

Come One, Come All-- It's Berry Picking Season!

We invite you to join us in the Water's Garden for a magnificent harvest. The currants, gooseberries, rasberries are all plump and pretty awaiting your tastebuds. Coming soon this Summer, Beyond Today will be hosting a number of cooking events where we will preserve, puree, cook and bake these tasty morsels--Because who knows what to do with a gooseberry? These classes will let you in on the cullinary secrets of how to use these rare (and normally rather expensive) berries. Your help can help us make the most out of these classes going forward. Take a few home too!

When? 10AM Tuesday, July 3rd and/or 2PM Thursday, July 5th (more dates evenings and weekends in the future)
Where? Water's Garden (Sunnyside and Campbell)

These berries are being gathered as a fundraising event for the school and our environmental projects. This is the very first time we are doing this and normally the berries are reserved to school children and families as well as volunteers who tend the garden. You are welcome to join the Water's Garden community by volunteering on Wednesday evenings after 6. Email us if you can't make it but are willing to help with berry gathering for this cause at other times or have special berry using skills which you could share.

Another Volunteer Opportunity! Seed Collection!

Seed Collecting

There are special seeds along the riverbank which need to be collected.
We'll be gathering seeds often, so let us know if you'd like to be part of the seed gathering crew.
It's very enjoyable work. We'll be collecting at Berteau/Hutchinson 1PM Tuesday and Thursday at 11AM. (more dates evenings and weekends in the future)

Other News:

Pete Leki, Julie Peterson, and summer intern, Adam, met with city officials last week about the pesticide spray for West Nile. We have a new plan for this year to work hard to keep an organic neighborhood while keeping mosquito populations in check. You'll hear more about this soon, but for now, we have an opportunity to do a bulk purchase of insect repellent (without DEET) but need to raise funds for this. Please let us know if you'll help us to make a bulk purchase, so we can offer it as we go door to door. Email us for more information. Thanks.

If you want us to order some extra insect repellent for your family and friends, also email us for details.

Action

We need your help on this. Please take a walk around your house or building and eliminate standing water.

Then take a walk around your block and up your alley and see if you spot any trouble areas. Email us if you have standing water on your block that concerns you. We need to know. This includes poorly maintained pools, dirty bird baths, tires or other containers that hold water, pits or holes in the ground with standing water, and, of course, clogged gutters. Once we know the extent of the standing water problem, we can find ways to do outreach and help people remove the standing water so we can stay healthy and a no-spray, low-mosquito neighborhood.

Remember:

You can always bring used cell phones and spent ink cartridges to any of our events. We recycle them as a fundraiser.

Thanks.
